3 Study Tips from students that scored a 5 on the AP Biology Exam

Understand the AP Biology vocabulary – One of the most important parts of the exam is demonstrating your knowledge of how concepts are connected, and using the correct terminology on the AP test is critical.  A study tip is to take a look at the different Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes and roots of words that you may encounter in biology. Understanding how to deduce concepts is important.

Understand the format & what is not including on the AP Bio exam – Knowing the format is important and knowing which areas to spend more time on can save you time and give you a better score. Also, knowing the scope of the AP Bio exam saves you study time. Many of the AP Bio text books will include current content but some of the older study books may include topics that are not included in this year’s test.

Know The 4 Big Ideas – The CollegeBoard has broken the AP Biology curriculum into 4 Big Ideas and these are key concepts that you will want to focus your AP Bio studying around.  Big Idea 1: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life. Big Idea 2: Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce and to maintain dynamic homeostasis. Big Idea 3: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit and respond to information essential to life processes. Big Idea 4: Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties.
